VAIO W Eco Edition

So I just played around with the Vaio W, and it's disappointingly low-end. It does have the new Pine Trail Atoms, but they have no plans to add video acceleration (like the Ion or Broadcom) which means it pretty much can't handle much heavy work. It's also running exclusively Windows 7 Starter. The environmental stuff is kind of cool; the lid, palm-rest and bottom panel are all made from 80% recycled material, and 20% of that is from recycled CDs and DVDs. But on the other hand, it's available only at Sony Style stores and it's going to cost a totally unreasonable $530. For that kind of money you can get a very respectable ultrathin or at least a netbook with Ion graphics.

Samsung I7500 Galaxy

The first Samsung mobile phone to run Google's Android operating system, the Galaxy smartphone is a strong competitor to the HTC Magic and possesses a brilliant AMOLED display. Although the Galaxy is fast and functional, it's disappointing that Samsung hasn't tweaked the standard Android user interface.

Features

The Samsung Galaxy doesn't support over-the-air firmware updates, nor does it have a digital compass (it does however include a regular compass). It's 7.2Mbps HSDPA-capable and features Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB connectivity via a standard micro-USB jack. Battery life is average for a smartphone possessing these features, with the Galaxy Icon managing to last a full day with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and hourly push e-mail activated.

Design & Usability

The Samsung Galaxy smartphone is a similar size to the
HTC Magic. It is housed in a glossy black case that attracts plenty of fingerprints but looks slick. The Galaxy lacks the trackball of the Magic and instead uses a large five-way navigational pad. This isn’t a huge issue, as the finger-operated touch screen is used most of the time (though the navigational pad isn’t the most stylish option). The option, back, home and answer/end call keys are large and responsive but could have been smaller or even scrapped to accommodate a larger display. One annoyance is the lock screen key — it needs to be held down for far too long to unlock the handset.

The Samsung Galaxy boasts an AMOLED display. Using less power than traditional LCD screens yet offering vivid, bright colors and excellent viewing angles, the 3.2in display is a highlight of this smartphone. We did notice color shift when looking at it off-centre horizontally and vertically, though the screen is brighter, clearer and sharper than a regular LCD.

The screen is responsive, but the Samsung Galaxy doesn't support multitouch. The lack of a physical keyboard may deter some, though the standard Android on-screen keyboard is responsive. However, the handset's auto-correction is far less effective than the iPhone 3GS' and the layout of the keys could use some work — they are a little too cramped.

Disappointingly, the Samsung Galaxy runs the standard Google Android platform with no major UI tweaks or additions. (Unlike the
HTC Hero, which had almost every aspect of the interface upgraded) This is not necessarily all bad news, but it’s a little disappointing. It's also strange when you consider Samsung's TouchWIZ UI has been developed for multiple operating systems already, including Symbian (Samsung OmniaHD), Windows Mobile (Samsung Omnia) and the company's proprietary OS (Samsung Pixon12 and Samsung Jet).

This disappointment aside, the Samsung Galaxy is still an Android phone and that’s largely good news. The home screen is split into three pages and you can add any icon from the main menu to the screen simply by pressing and dragging it. The best part of the interface is the status bar: dragging it downwards reveals a full screen of your latest notifications. The notifications remain on-screen until you clear them. This drop-down screen is available wherever you see the status bar.

Predictably, the Galaxy integration with Google services is excellent. The phone will automatically synchronize your Google calendar, mail and contacts over the air. When you add a new contact or calendar event on your PC, it will automatically appear on your phone and vice versa. If you don't have a Google account, you can create one on the Galaxy Icon itself and easily import a contact list from Microsoft Outlook or even Apple's address book. Support for Microsoft Exchange is on offer, though this requires a download from the Android Market — Google's answer to Apple's App Store.

Unfortunately, if you don't use Gmail as your primary address, the regular mail client (a completely separate application from Gmail) is mediocre. There is no way to delete multiple e-mails, no way to mark all e-mails as read and you can't download or view attachments.

Google Maps is a standard app and we found the GPS quite quick to latch onto a signal. The Galaxy uses the standard Android Internet browser. The lack of multitouch means you'll need to tap the icons on the screen to zoom in and out and there is no Flash support, but pages load fast and display on the screen with few issues.

Multimedia

As a multimedia device, the Samsung Galaxy fares much better than the
HTC Magic thanks to the inclusion of a 3.5mm headphone jack. It can record and play videos and has A2DP Bluetooth for wireless music streaming. The phone's 5-megapixel camera with a single LED flash is better than the Magic's. It takes reasonable photos for a camera phone, with good color and detail, though image noise is an issue. The Samsung Galaxy Icon has 8GB of internal storage as well as a microSD card slot — annoyingly located behind the rear battery cover.

Bottom Line

The Samsung Galaxy is priced at Rs. 24,300. The price might be high (especially when you take the standard looks and UI into consideration) but the fact remains that the Galaxy is highly usable and has excellent online features. The Galaxy ensures that Samsung’s first dalliance with the Android platform is a sparkling affair.

RIM Blackberry Outage December 22, BBM Not Working Again!

San Francisco - Not even a week have passed but RIM BlackBerry is yet again facing some problems with its messenger. This time the outage has been throughout the north America and the users throughout the continent has been affected by this incident. Coincidentally, Research In Motion has also released newer 5.0.0.57 version on the same day after they have released the 5.0.0.55 and 5.0.0.56 in the previous week. Whether the new version release is linked to this outage incident is not yet known.

The nationwide BlackBerry Outage was the main event people were talking about in Twitter and some issues may be related to this outage. Firstly, During this Christmas week, there may be a large use of the BlackBerry services. Secondly, RIM seems to have some issues with the capacity handling problems and thirdly it seems that there is a lack of planning to solve the emergency situation problems.

It is reported that RIM is aware of the outage and is working on the problem but they did not mention any time when it will be all clear. Some people are starting to feel like their social life is on jeopardy until the error is corrected and they can get to twitter or use other browser to surf other sites.

People use BlackBerry for their best e-mail and messenger services. You can grab your email in real time off an Exchange server and there is still no competitor to it. But if things start to happen this way, people may move to iPhone or Nokia E-Series who are waiting for every opportunity

Asus Eee PC 1005 PE Review

Asus is well known for its exclusive Eee PCs and this new Eee PC 1005 PE is the latest addition to its netbook lineup. It has the latest Intel Atom N450 Processor and is built on its earlier successful notebook 1005 HA Seashell that we reviewed earlier. The new processor makes the device run up to 14 hours as least on the spec sheet of the netbook. Let’s check some other details of the device and decide if it is worth a buy or not.

Design and Build
There is nothing new in the design itself and looks very much like the 1005 HA Seashell. The overall design is a little thicker with its removable battery but doesn’t look clumsy by any means. The overall build quality is very good for a budget notebook like this and has a pretty solid feel to it.

Performance
The new Intel Atom N450 is not a powerful beast but almost with same processing capability as the more common N270 or N280 processors. But the difference lies as it uses the Intel GMA 3150 graphics while the older Atom 280 processors were stuck with the Intel GMA 950 graphics. The system becomes a bit more capable to handle things like HD Video or an occasional session or image processing etc. Do not try to play any high def 3 D games in this device or you are destined for a disappointment. The 1GB SDRAM is good enough for normal everyday tasks and the 250 GB HDD is also enough to store all your favorite music and videos and every other thing.

Display
The display is a standard 1024 X 600 pixels display measuring 10.1 inches diagonally. The screen is a glossy one which has a very good brightness and contrasts showing live colors but, as usual, it suffers from glares and reflections in bright light conditions. When it comes to viewing angles of the display, I would say that the vertical viewing angles are quite average and the horizontals ones are just a bit better. However, you do not need to be worried about it, as you are not supposed to watch an HD movie in this netbook with a couple of your friends.

Audio
We were impressed with the sound quality nevertheless especially keeping in mind the average quality of the budget netbook speakers. The speakers sounded very good even at high volume level without any distortion. The high to midrange sound were very good and it is quite obvious not to hear any bass range without a dedicated subwoofer which the 1005 PE did not have. A good pair of headphones are recommended for the audiophiles as is always.

Keyboard
The keyboard is very good and have good springy feedback and response. There is a good click sound response with the keys pressing in and the chicklet style keyboards are good to see functioning very well. We had no problem typing at high speeds in this keyboard though we expected the keys to be a bit bigger.

TouchPad
The touchpad also has very good response with its synaptics technology. The surface of the touchpad is rough and feels very good while moving our finger across the touchpad. It also supports multi finger gestures and you can customize these gestures as well. However, the buttons are not that well. They have very shallow feedback and it is very uncomfortable to click them conveniently.

Ports
It has VGA Out, USB Port, Security lock slot and power jack in the left side and a 4 - in - 1 card reader, headphone and microphone jack and another two USB Port and a necessary Ethernet slot in its right side. It does not miss out on any important slot but it does not also have any advanced ports like firewire or HDMI port. However, the port selection should be more than enough for normal usage.

Battery
The new processor has the biggest advantage of better battery life. In our tests, we managed to get a huge 12 hour runtime with little to no usage breaking all of our previous records. With heavy workload you can expect to run 1005 PE at least 8 hours which is not a joke by any means.

Pros
Astounding Battery Life
Good Build quality for a budget netbook

Cons
Unsatisfactory Touchpad buttons

Conclusion
If you want a power beast, this is not the laptop for you but if you want a power saver, there is no better laptop than this. With its stellar battery life and good overall features and build quality this is definitely a good laptop for those who will be using it for normal everyday usage away from the power sources for quite sometime.

Nokia E63 Review, Price

Nokia E63 is a mobile phone built for those people who need to keep in touch with their business with full keyboard e-mail messaging capability but also do not want to end up spending a large sum of money for the device. It is basically a watered down device of the old and popular Nokia E71 that we reviewed earlier. Let’s take a closer look at the device and decide if the gadget is worth a buy or not.

Design
The device looks quite similar to the E71 in its overall appearance sans any metallic cover which is expected for a trimmed down version. The device is 59 mm wide to comfortably hold the full QWERTY keys and it is 113mm tall which is natural for a device like this. The phone is neither too thin nor too thick and measures a 13mm in thickness. The total weight of 126 g may feel a bit heavier than the non QWERTY ones but it is certainly lighter than the E71 having metal design. However, the plastic design looks and feels OK and we have no problem in this cost-effective approach.

Display
The phone boasts a nice 2.36 inches display showing 320 X 240 pixels and full 16 M Color range. We have no complain with the display and it shows very good crisp texts as well as vibrant images.

Keyboard
The keyboard of Nokia E63 is very good and is almost the same as the E71. The size of the space bar is reduced to add to new keys, the parenthesis and the Ctrl Key. Pressing and holding down the space bar activates the flashlight which works even when the keyboard is locked. Typing at fair speed is possible with the keyboard and the D Pad and the soft keys are also equally pleasing.

Operating System
The phone runs on Symbian Series 60 3rd Edition. The Symbian 9.2 comes with Feature Pack 1 but also has some elements of the Feature Pack 2. Multitasking on the device is as easy as it sounds on the device. The running applications are indicated by a circle next to the icon which reminds users to quit any applications that they may be using. The active standby mode is also very handy to get the shortcuts of the applications to the homescreen.

Speed
The phone has a 369 MHz CPU and a 128 MB RAM. With the Symbian OS running on top of it, the CPU delivers almost instant response. Navigating the menus and using applications is quick and you should not notice any hang up issues for any common tasks. There is also a 128 M RAM which is large enough to be filled with all your applications running on it.

Battery Life
The battery life of the device is truly worth a mention before any of its other advanced features. It has the same 1500 mAh Li Ion battery that is used in its bigger brother E71. With this much large a battery and no GPS to eat up the power, this is definitely going to win any businessman’s heart for its superb battery life. It is stated at the spec sheet to have a 432 h standby and a 11 and half hours talktime and I can assure you that it won’t do too much less than that.

Memory
The phone has a decent 120 MB internal memory and it supports micro SD Cards upto 8GB. Unfortunately it does not come with any micro SD card pre installed. You have to buy one after you purchase the phone. When Nokia means budget, they really mean it.

Audio / Voice Clarity
It is now very unlikely to have any voice issues on a modern day telephone device and you are extremely unlikely to experience any reception issues. The sound is very clear and there is no problem with it. The 3.5mm headphone jack provides clear static noise free sound as expected. The music player of the device is also well equipped though we miss the volume rocker on the side of the device. Changing the volume level means pushing a few extra keys on the device. If you don’t want to listen to your stores music, FM Radio is there for the break.

Camera
Don’t expect too much from the fixed focus 2MP Camera and you’ll be fine. The photos have low resolution as well as poor details and color accuracy. You have to compromise on this because you are looking for an affordable business phone not an affordable multimedia phone.

Web Browser
The Symbian browser is nothing to complain about. Contents render properly and it is a treat to surf web on the device. Thanks to its large RAM size, even heavy pages load on the browser without any problem on the device. The browser also supports Flash, so watching a YouTube video within browser won’t be a problem.

Price
The price of the phone is about $200 in US, about EUR 150 in Europe and about Rs. 10,000 in India. This is a bargain price for a device of its capability.

Pros
Attractive price with all business features
Superb Battery Life

Cons
Poor Camera

Conclusion
If you are in the market for the lowest price QWERTY smartphone, you won’t find many competitor in its price range. If you have no problem with its poor camera or any other thing mentioned here, the phone is surely recommended by us for you.
